Every short story was introduced by the author with a small text, giving a background on how Harris had Small kingdoms book up with the idea of the plot or characters, which also added to the general story and reading experience. All interesting and fun to read. In these 4 short stories, we see how her past affects her present. Harris does provide a clever twist in "Sarah Smiles," in which a star pupil is the victim of physical abuse.
My only gripe is that it was short and I honestly would have liked more. Charlaine Harris never disappoints and Anne DeWitt is one of her best characters ever. I super enjoyed being in this world with these characters and would gladly gobble up more. With each new story, I've tried to show a different side of Anne.

The reader has to stop every so often and wonder if they would have Originally appearing in the pages of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Small Kingdoms introduced Anne DeWitt, who presents herself as the principal of a small-town high school, but who's a whole lot more.
Just brilliant. Anne had a unique way of helping, as well as a new cohort. I give two stars rather than one because it was readable, the writing style and character development were at least minimally competent although not exceptional, and I never felt the urge to throw the book at a wall.

I sincerely cannot think of a negative thing to say, except that perhaps this book of a few intertwined short stories just simply was not long enough! I had not read these previous 4 stories so this was all new and entertaining to read.
The other books I've read and loved by Harris all had deep, intricate world building.
